Born to a family of Australian artists of several generations, Zara grew up in a community surrounded by influential and distinguished Australian artists, such as John Olsen, Clifton Pugh and Arthur Boyd. Her early exposure to indigenous art combined with an appreciation of the spontaneous line, formed the distinct style for which she is now known.
In 1980 Zara studied Chinese calligraphy as a student of the Chinese Master Gu Gan. In 1988 she also studied Japanese calligraphy and Language at the University of Melbourne. This forms the basis of her technique which fundamentally seeks the original signature emanating from the chi or core energy, to dictate the use of line and color.
While residing in Uruguay, Zara found that her work began to reflect the familiar refraction of Southern Hemisphere sunlight on the new and unfamiliar landscape of Uruguay. This exciting combination of the known and the unknown has brought a confidence and inspiration to her recent paintings.
Currently Zara resides in Penang, Malaysia, where she enjoys and is influenced by the Island's rich multicultural community. Once again she is focused on the people in all their variety, and finds herself particularly drawn to representing the women of Penang in her art.
